The Shining Star

Once, there was a star named Jonalyn.

Jonalyn was apart from all the other stars that dotted the heavens. For Jonalyn was cursed. She had no light. She had no ability to twinkle. Thus, she was considered inferior and completely without beauty. She was not allowed to join the majestic constellations. She was always alone , alone in her own darkness.

Every night. Jonalyn would weep for she knew that she had nothing to contribute to the magic of the evening sky. She would shed tears for hours but nobody ever heard her. For she only wept deep inside her and no sound can be heard from her cries. She truly believed that her life’s destiny was an eternity of loneliness.

But one night, a fellow star came before Jonalyn. At first, she was blinded by the luminous glow of such star. He introduced himself. His name was Tristin. He’s part of the beautiful constellation - Big Dipper. Jonalyn stared at the magical being in front of her. She had never seen a star so bright, so exquisite. Right away, she knew that the star was extraordinary. And when he spoke, there was no more doubt left in her mind. He came for her. He had heard her cries.

At first, Jonalyn wondered how could that have happened. How could he have known?
Then she thought, Tristin was special.
Jonalyn and Tristin became friends. They spent so much time together.

This made the other stars angry, especially the group, Big Dipper. That was because they were always missing one star, Tristin. They told Jonalyn about their grievance and they demanded that she urge Tristin to fulfill his duty as part of the constellation.

Jonalyn was saddened but she knew she had no right to deprive the world of Tristin’s brightness. She talked to Tristin and told him that he has the obligation to fulfill his destiny and that is, to continue spreading magic throughout the heavens.

Unexpectedly, Tristin just smiled and he told her that he would do that. But in no way will he stop seeing her. So, during the day, Tristin would travel miles and miles to be with Jonalyn and then travel the long way back in time to join his group when night comes. He continued to do this. Sometimes, he would get so tired but he will push on so that he can bring happiness to Jonalyn. Despite all his efforts, his light never faltered and he continued to shine the brightest among all the stars. For he was different.

. . . He was special.

Jonalyn was so happy she never cried anymore. She had found a friend who loved her as she was and made her feel like she had a glow that only Tristin could see. Everyday, she looked forward to seeing him and every night, she was contented to watch him from afar as he joined his constellation.

But all of those didn’t keep her from wishing that she could have a light of her own.
So, he prayed. She prayed and prayed to the Creator that she will become like the other stars who have the ability to shine. She never stopped doing that but her prayers went unanswered. She became miserable once again. Only the thought of Tristin’s friendship made her want to fight the loneliness.

But the next day, Tristin did not come. And then the day after and the day after that. Several days passed and there was no sign of Tristin. That’s when Jonalyn realized, her life was over.
Once more, the tears came and Jonalyn was alone again. She missed Tristin so much but she could not do anything to reach him. She figured that maybe, he finally got tired of her ugliness and misfortune. She had never felt so dejected.

But one amazing night, something unexpected happened. A spark lighted up within Jonalyn. Then another, and another. It grew and grew until finally. . .

. . .She was shining.
She was shining!

The entire galaxy was lighted up by Jonalyn’s glow. Everybody admired her and in no time at all, she was the most beautiful star in the heavens. Jonalyn couldn’t contain her happiness. Now, she had so many friends, and she was never alone anymore.
Jonalyn wanted to thank the Creator for his goodness. She traveled for light years until she reached His Kingdom. She stood before Him and profusely thanked Him for His blessing.
Then, He spoke.

“Dear child, I am the Master of Goodness and it is true that all good things come from me. But I never do it alone. All beings I’ve created contribute to the universal goodness that is the ultimate source of happiness. You are a lucky one to be on the receiving end of that goodness.
You have Tristin to thank for that.”

Jonalyn was surprised at the mention of Tristin’s name. She asked Him the meaning of His statement.
He answered: “ Tristin is the reason why you shine brightly today. He made the ultimate sacrifice. That night, when you were praying, he came to me. He chose to leave his constellation. Do you know why?”

Jonalyn did not answer.
“Tristin had chosen to become a falling star. . .
. . .so that he can make your wish come true.”

Jonalyn was stunned of what she learned. She went back to the galaxy and rejoined the other stars. She cried and cried for days and the others were worried about her. Her light grew dimmer and dimmer, dimmer and dimmer.

But just before she completely faded into darkness, she stopped crying.
And once again, her light shone brightly. She would not waste the gift that Tristin gave her.
She would fulfill her life’s destiny.

So night after night, Jonalyn lighted up the heavens in all her glory. She was the picture of ultimate happiness, the purest magic.

Light years passed and her gleam never faltered. Her destiny was fulfilled.
But through all these, Jonalyn never forgot Tristin.
. . .the star who fell so that she could shine.
